Sensing

Diode lasers are widely used in sensing applications such as detection of gases or liquids, industrial process monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, LiDAR, and consumer/automotive sensors.

They are preferred because they are compact, energy-efficient, cost-effective, and easy to integrate. They are available across a wide wavelength range. The upper NIR range offers eye-safe wavelengths (typically ≥1400 nm) that bring the advantage of making regulatory approval much easier.

In sensing systems, diode lasers provide precise, stable optical sources for predictable interaction with gases, tissues, and surfaces. They act as interrogation beams whose absorption, reflection, scattering, or time-of-flight reveals information about the target.

Key factors  for this market are wavelength accuracy and stability, and reliability and lifetime in harsh environments. Their attractive size/weight/power defines cost and manufacturability.
