Acne – Sebacious Glands

Selective Photothermolysis

  • Acne is a common chronic skin condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. A combination of factors play a role: excess sebum production, clogged hair follicles, inflammation, proliferation of bacteria.
  • Selective photothermolysis is emerging as a non-invasive option for reducing sebaceous gland activity.
  • Lasers deliver controlled heat to the sebaceous glands in the mid-dermis. Thermal damage causes the glands to shrink or be partially destroyed, thus reducing sebum output and acne activity.
  • Relevant laser wavelengths are:
1726nm – the most acne specific wavelength
1450nm – still good sebum reduction
1064nm – less specific but versatile beyond acne
  • All three wavelengths can be provided by Lumics.
